Learning Management Systems (LMS) is a software program that helps an organization, business or educational, create, manage, and deliver eLearning courses and information. Some uses for an LMS can include employee training, employee orientation, and education.
Blackboard allows the instructor or instructional designer to design the left navigation according to the needs of the class. Using Unicode, unique characters, the navigation menu can include icons to make it more visually appealing. Students can self-enroll in the course by utilizing a password that is setup by the Distance Education Office. YouTube videos can be embedded directly into the content folder where it plays in Blackboard instead of redirecting to an external link. Learners can me assigned to specific groups for team collaboration within a course. The analytics in Blackboard allows instructors to view learner progress and scores on Blackboard provided exams.
A disadvantage of Blackboard is the instructor is not able to manually add users to the course, it has to go through an external office. The current version of Blackboard is not as visually appealing. Blackboard will be used for Project GRAD’s Summer Institute for math, English and College 101. Over the past week, I have created the content and uploaded it in Blackboard.
Asana is a project management tool accessible through the web or as a mobile application that allows organizations to get organized. An organization can create Projects in Asana, invite members to join that project, assign tasks to that member and attach deadlines. This tool is helpful for organizations that have members in separate locations or with separate work schedules. One of the features that is helpful is the reports section where the project manager or supervisor can run reports on the tasks they’ve assigned and tasks completed already. Since I oversee student employees with varying work schedules everyone is not always together to have department meetings and discuss project planning. Using Asana allows me to delegate tasks to specific people with the description of the task. Another great feature allows questions to be asked through a chat about the task.
One downside to Asana is the annual cost to have additional benefits. For the Premium account it is $9.99 per user per month billed annually. For the Business account, it is $19.99 per user per month and features all of the Premium features plus form creator and onboarding and training with Customer Success.
